Can I travel with a fuel can?

Fuel Cans

As per the latest Marine Guidance Note (MGN 545), customers can carry the following:

For travel from the UK to the Continent and Republic of Ireland (UK to Northern Ireland can ship both ways)

  • a maximum of 5 litres of petrol / diesel per vehicle
  • in an approved container i.e. container sold for the purpose of fuel transportation only (red/green plastic can).
  • in a private vehicle not in commercial use.

For travel from the Continent to the UK:

  • fuel cans, if carried, must be empty
  • customers must ensure that the fuel can is washed and that no residue remains as it is the fumes that are the risk.

If you are unsure on the regulations surrounding the transportation of fuel, please speak to one of our advisers who will be happy to help.
